Student thesis: Master's Thesis

Abstract

As a consequence of terrorist attacks at various international airports around the world, seaport security has become critically important. There are several ways a terrorist can get bombs and attack seaports. It is important for naval forces to stay alert and protect the seaports from such attacks. Terrorists have been using weapons of mass destruction (WMD) to attack airports and have gained access to many cities such as Mumbai in November 2008 by sea. Through the use of containers, terrorists can attack seaports, there have been many suggestions put forward at the international level to tighten the port security and protect countries from such terrorist attacks. Initiatives have been put in place to secure maritime transportation from such terrorist activities. The port used as a case study in this thesis is the Jabel Ali Seaport of UAE, which is at risk of a security lapse. The literature review sheds light in port security and provides insight into how secure ports are today. The role of the government is reviewed. It is determined that it is vital in protecting the ports from such attacks and there is a need to find new measures to combat such forces. There has to be application of new laws, regulations and doctrines to prevent attacks at the seaport. The recommendation is that new measures are incorporated along all the ports in a consistent manner to reduce the risks of threat from such agents. Technical and planning issues have to be considered when implementing seaport security systems.
