This thesis examines the operational challenges and strategic measures aimed at boosting the attractiveness of East African ports, focusing on the regions’ potential to become more appealing to major global shipping companies like Maersk. The research is particularly significant for the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as it aligns with the UAE’s strategic interests in East Africa. The UAE is a major investor in the region and enhancing port operations could strengthen its economic and geopolitical influence, ensuring the stability and security of maritime routes critical for global trade, especially through strategic choke points like Bab El Mandeb Strait which connects the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The study employs a qualitative methodology on East African ports. Through semi-structured interviews with key Maersk personnel and port experts, the research aims to provide a deep understanding of the ports' operational realities and the potential impact of proposed enhancements. The findings offer critical insights into strategic interventions necessary to elevate these ports to international standards, thereby facilitating regional trade dynamics and reinforcing their role in the global shipping worldwide network.
