Abstract

The fashion industry, known for its dynamic nature and significant economic impact, is currently facing a crucial moment as it strives to incorporate sustainable practices into its extensive expansion. The current system, which is distinguished by a linear model of 'take-make-dispose', unethical labor practices, and significant waste, presents significant sustainability issues. This has stimulated the development of novel approaches that can align industry operations with environmental and ethical criteria. In this thesis, we propose innovative blockchain-based solutions aimed at addressing three pivotal sustainability issues in the fashion industry: transparency in the sustainable certification process, enhancement of the fashion rental market, and certification of recycled materials. Firstly, we introduce a system to instill end-to-end transparency and traceability within the certification of the garment supply chain, fortified by smart contracts to ensure data integrity and foster sustainable practices. Secondly, we develop a solution to streamline the fashion rental process, employing blockchain to underpin a reliable, efficient, and transparent system that enhances the garment’s lifecycle management. Lastly, we present a solution for the certification of recycled materials, leveraging the immutable nature of blockchain to provide a verifiable lineage of materials, thereby boosting consumer confidence and industry accountability. For each proposed solution, we designed system architecture, developed and tested smart contracts, and conducted a cost analysis.
