Software Defined Networking has many promising security applications one of them is Denial of Service attack mitigation. Due to the dynamic nature of such attacks it would require dynamic response which can mitigate the attack with the minimum false positive. The objective of the proposed thesis is to demonstrate how SDN can be used to protect online services e.g. websites, DNS and email service against Layer (3) and Layer (4) Denial of Service Attack in efficient and effective manner utilizing downstream and upstream SDN controllers with the minimum human interaction and in automated manner then compare it against traditional Denial of Service protection systems.
