Fault Analysis of The I2C Bus in CubeSats and Proposed Mitigation Techniq

    Abstract

    The failure of the I2C bus is a risk to most of CubeSat missions, causing some catastrophic failures. This study analyzes the I2C bus characteristics, the hardware and software requirements, the causes of I2C bus failure, and the possible approaches to mitigate failures of the bus. The study is based on experimental testing, bus characteristics are studied, a list of possible failures is constructed, experimental testing is conducted with the appropriate hardware and software. Based on the results of experiments, mitigation methods are proposed and finally a qualitative risk analysis is delivered. The study concluded the high influence of the I2C bus on the CubeSat health and mission success, where the tested failure modes showed risk with relatively high consequence on the mission, highlighting the importance of design consideration to reduce missions' risk level, as well as counting for runtime failures that can occur during mission operation.
