Cloud computing is novel model of information technology (IT) that provides tremendous economic merits such as efficient marketing, limitless computing potential as well as flexible computing power. It has led to the development of various on-demand services such as Software as a Service (SaaS), Infrastructure as a Service (Iaas) and Platform as a Service (PaaS). With the increase in internet access, the users of the Internet can get computing resources, software services and storage space depending on their requirements. With the myriad resources available in a cloud-computing environment, users can easily address their problems by utilizing the resources rendered by a cloud. In that regards, it offers great flexibility to clients. Notably, with such services, users of cloud can store important data in cloud servers and retrieve them anywhere they wand as long as they can access the Internet. Nevertheless, the cloud-computing environment faces the challenge of authentication over one cloud and between multiple clouds. Many techniques have been devised but concerns about data security are still apparent. In that respect, this dissertation identifies federated identities as the best method for enhancing authentication over cloud. Notably, little research has been done regarding the superiority of this method as a way of improving security in the cloud environment hence the motivation for this study. The other motivation was the need to have a checklist and audit plan. This is important since it ensures that there is a careful planning of the safety and security to ensure that the computing atmosphere is as safe as possible and complies with institutional policies of security. The report also provides way forward recommendations such as the need for cloud service users to work with cloud providers who meets the safety and privacy standards or checklists that are provided by information technology experts.
