Detection of Scale Deposition in Oil Pipelines An Optical Approach

Abstract

The problem of scale deposition has attracted a lot of attention recently. It causes many complications in the oil field and it may affect the overall well performance. If not detected and treated, it can reduce the life span of some equipment and pipelines, and in some severe cases it can be the reason to abandon the well. Until now, there have been no final products that allow the user to detect and monitor early stages of scaling. In this thesis, we started by studying the problem of scale deposition, its formation and the several problems it causes in an oil field. After that a review on the current detection approaches was conducted. Then, we conducted a study on the preparation of this scaling material in controlled environment for further testing. Based on the sample preparation process, an approach using light sensing techniques is presented for the early detection of scale deposition. This approach is studied theoretically then proved experimentally. The results on the success of this approach are presented along with its limitations.
