Customizing safety and security materials by the Abu Dhabi Police for various nationalities

Abstract

The main aim of this study is to evaluate the customization of public awareness materials provided by Abu Dhabi Police for various nationalities. Another aim for the study is to propose recommendations for Abu Dhabi Police so as to enhance its current awareness procedures. The study involved the evaluation of printed materials provided by four different departments in Abu Dhabi Police - Community Department, Tourism Department, Ports and Airport Security Directorate and Drugs Enforcement Directorate. The degree of customization was measured by looking at three properties of the material - language readability, content and presentational suitability. The study shows that there is a lack of customization level of materials provided by the four departments of Abu Dhabi Police. The customization for Arabic and native English speakers is at a reasonable level, there needs to be significant improvement in the customization of the material for non-native English speakers. This is a significant issue as the majority of expatriates in the UAE are non-native English speakers.
