Student thesis: Master's Thesis

Abstract

This MA thesis explores the degree to which cyber security-based schools materials for grade 12 Emirati students are applicable and relevant based on the extent those materials are tailored to the local culture of the students. This is necessary in order for the students to be able to grasp relevant cyber security concepts and knowledge clearly and effectively. The thesis made use of a qualitative research methodology in order to successfully meet its objectives, to include expert interviews being conducted at the UAE's Ministry of Education. The thesis hypothesized that there are low levels of grade 12 cyber security based-school material customization in the UAE for Emirati students, especially when compared to those in three other countries: namely Estonia, Australia and India. According to the research results, the cyber security materials for grade 12 students in the UAE are little customized. This conclusion was reached by taking into consideration a coding framework developed and use in the data analysis process as well as relevant findings based on Hofstede's cultural framework. Relevant implications and recommendations were included in the findings, such as a suggested review of the aforementioned material by a dedicated local team as well as the involvement of parents and students in the curricula development process.
