Variable speed latching magnetic actuator for a vacuum switch

Abstract

A vacuum switch magnetic actuator, comprised of two solenoid driving units and magnetically separate permanent magnet latching modules that can achieve variable contact speeds, is developed. This is applied in a 320 A, 1.5 kV vacuum switch used in a prototype 300 kVA three phase tap changer. The extensive testing of this device showed that their performance is satisfactory.
