Abstract
Smart and cognitive cities must constantly balance the environmental consequences of urbanization and technological advancements. The infrastructure of the Internet of Buildings (IoB) is one of the modern solutions that is in its early stage of implementation. Those buildings have a low environmental footprint while providing convenience to their inhabitants. Sustainable smart IoBs are composed of distinct integrated technologies such as IoT, AI, 6G, surveillance, computing capabilities, etc. Numerous sensors communicate data in real-time, and data are sent to local servers and then to the cloud servers to create the utmost accurate communication privacy. To reduce latency in communications and computing, recently, data are being computed at the edge using Federated Learning (FL). The local model is occasionally sent to the cloud server to create an optimal model concerning the broad components of the building. The objective of this article is to put forward a system model for sustainable smart IoBs with advanced communications technologies to enhance privacy and security, computation efficiency, and energy usage. AI-based advanced communication and its features for achieving integrated system automation as well as IoB technical sensors features are further discussed. Finally, we have laid out some potential existing and emerging challenges along with the future directions of sustainable smart IoB.
