The Effect of the Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Technology Deployment on the Natural Gas Market in the United Arab Emirates

Abstract

Deployment of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology is one of the implemented methods to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is one of the countries that are striving towards vast economic growth, rapid urbanization and population boom that eventually resulted in an enormous increase in primary energy consumption and carbon emissions per capita. This study evaluates the effect of the CCS technology in large scale deployment on the natural gas (NG) market in the UAE. In the situation where the captured CO2 is used for enhancing the oil recovery (EOR), a benefit to the NG market will be added due to freeing up NG used in oil wellbores. The study reveals that for a 60% and 90% capture, a net amount of 5.32 and 21.16 million metric tonnes (mmtones) of NG will be saved yearly. Such saving will reduce the heavy dependence on importing NG and increase the opportunity of using NG for other industrial and domestic purposes.
