    Abstract

Magnetically separable magnetic graphene/chitosan composite (MGC) and magnetic graphene oxide/chitosan (MGOC) composite materials were synthesized by facile hydrothermal technique and simple chemical method respectively. Both the composites were analyzed using various analytical techniques. XRD result clearly reveals the successful formation of the composites. The FESEM images shows the attachment of Fe3O4 nanoparticles over the graphene sheets without agglomeration. The composites also possess enough magnetic property responsible for the easiest separation from aqueous solution, which is evident from the magnetic studies. The adsorption of 1-napthylamine on the composites was studied by varying certain parameters such as amount of adsorbent dose, contact time and pH. The adsorption behavior of MGC and MGOC composites are described well by Freundlich isotherm, whereas MGC composite revealed better activity with the maximum adsorption capacity and removal percent of 209.6 mg/g and 99.8 % respectively within a short period of 25 min at neutral pH (pH 7).The enhanced activity of MGC is mainly due to the existence of numerous active sites arising from the reduction of functional groups.
