Abstract

This paper presents the application of original Heliosat-2 and a recalibrated version for global horizontal irradiance (GHI) estimation at temporal and spatial resolutions of 30min and 3km, respectively, over the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Environment of the UAE is characterized by high concentrations of airborne dust particles and high humidity making this case interesting. Main inputs to the model are the monthly Linke turbidity factor normalized to an air mass of 2 and a cloud index derived from the SEVIRI instrument, onboard Meteosat Second Generation satellite. Over four stations used in the study, the recalibrated version produces relative root mean square error and relative mean bias error values of 10.1% and -0.5%, respectively, as opposed to 17.9% and -15.2%, respectively, for the original model. The paper also presents the temporal variations of the estimated versus ground measured GHI throughout a winter month and a summer month.
