On classification of solitons

Abstract

Formation of solitons and their stability have been analyzed on the basis of analogy between a soliton and a self-trapping quantum particle for two classes of nonlinear equations, involving the Korteweg-de-Vries and Schrödinger equations. As an example a three-dimensional saddle soliton of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation has been calculated and its role in evolution of the wave packet shown. Possible types of instability for these equations are indicated.
