Abstract
A two-dimensional numerical model is developed to simulate the aerothermodynamical behavior of the arc plasma of a SF6 circuit breaker. The model is based on the resolution of the hydrodynamic and electromagnetic equations by the control volume method using the results of thermodynamic and gas kinetic calculations of the thermophysical and electric transport properties. The objective of the numerical study is to explore the effects of radiative heat losses, copper vapor presence, and induced magnetic field on the plasma characteristics during the high and stable current period of the interruption process. When all these effect are considered, good agreements between experimental results and our results are obtained.
