Novel thyristor-assisted tap changer scheme

Abstract

On-load tap changing transformers area an essential part of any modern power system. It allows voltages to be maintained at desired levels despite load changes. Thyristor-assisted and solid-state tap changers are developed to retain the mechanical parts of a standard tap changer and suppress arcing between switch contacts in the diverter. It has a fast response and demonstrates that steady-state losses in semiconductors can be eliminated and that tap changing occurs correctly for all power factors.
