Abstract
Within the “planetary boundaries” framework that defines the safe operating space for humanity on planet Earth, the “novel entities” boundary risks being surpassed both by quantity of pollutants and by our own ignorance of potential impacts. Water—essential for all earth systems—is perhaps most at risk. An evolving cocktail of pollutants endangers human health, agriculture, and the environment.
