Abstract
The amplitude modulation of longitudinal waves propagating in a one-dimensional dust-crystal was investigated. The Schrödinger equations governing the evolution of the longitudinal dust lattice (LDL) wave envelope were derived, using a continuum approximation. The prediction of existence of asymmetric envelope localized modes was also discussed. It was found that long wavelength carrier waves were generally stable, evolving towards the formation of voids, while longer wavelengths allowed the formation of envelope pulses.
