Abstract

Distribution system power quality is degraded by connecting different types of electronic loads to the system. These nonlinear loads have the potential to increase the overall harmonic distortion levels on distribution system. This paper discusses the possible impacts of the interactions between both load voltage and current harmonics due to the presence of the source impedance. Also the paper deals with improving the distribution system power quality through the minimization of the net harmonic currents injected into the system by different single phase nonlinear loads. The reactive harmonic currents are compensated with reactance one-port filter. The main conclusion of this work is that neglecting the interaction effect may lead to wrong estimation of the harmonic levels. The distortion level caused by harmonics injected by nonlinear loads can be minimized by using passive circuits.
