Abstract

Microalgae are eukaryotic microorganisms that have gained attention because of their ability to synthesize diverse bioactive compounds, rapid biomass growth, and adjustable biochemical compositions. Genetic engineering techniques have been developed to optimize microalgal strains, increase their productivity, and modify them to produce novel bioproducts with potential applications, particularly in the production of high-value bioproducts for biomedical purposes. This chapter covers the strategies used to enhance the biosynthesis of specific compounds, improve bio-productivity, and the potential biomedical applications of these enhanced high-value bioproducts. Genetic engineering techniques have been developed to optimize microalgal strains, increase their productivity, and modify them to produce novel bioproducts with potential applications, particularly in the production of high-value bioproducts for biomedical purposes.
