Abstract
To guarantee food security, creative solutions are needed to address the world’s fast-expanding population and environmental issues. With their high nutritional content and low demand for resources like water and arable land, microalgae provide a sustainable and nutrient-dense substitute for traditional food systems. With a focus on their high protein, fat, carbohydrate, vitamin, and mineral content, this chapter examines the possibilities of microalgae in the production of food in the future. Applications in human food, animal feed, and medicine are discussed, as well as how they might help combat hunger and advance sustainability. The potential of microalgae as a foundation for future food systems is highlighted by developments in cultivation technology and market integration, notwithstanding obstacles like production costs and consumer acceptance. A discussion on overcoming obstacles to achieve their potential in ensuring global food sustainability closes off the chapter.
