Mapping faults and fractures in a carbonate reservoir from 3D VSP data

Abstract

A high resolution reverse time migrated volume was formed using 3D Vertical Seismic Profile (3D VSP) data acquired over a carbonate reservoir in an oilfield offshore Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The migrated volume was used for the extraction of faults and fractures. After removal of acquisition footprints from the data using a filter designed in the wavenumber domain, faults and fractures were extracted using a semblance based coherency attribute algorithm, and a binary filter. We found that most of the strike azimuths of the extracted faults and fractures in a reservoir depth range are NNE-SSW and NE-SW. These orientations are in good agreement with interpreted strike azimuths of fractures from available core data, and with previous studies in the area.
