Abstract

The impact properties of glass fabric reinforcements coated with graphite nanoparticles were investigated. Graphite nanoplatelets (xGnP) were coated onto either one surface only or both surfaces of plain weave S-2 glass fabrics. Samples were prepared with 0.5 wt% and 1.0 wt% xGnP coated on one surface of the glass fabric and with 0.5 wt% coated on both sides of the glass fabric. xGnP coated glass fabric preforms were infused using SC-15 epoxy resin by the VARTM process. An instrumented impact test system was used to test 10 cm x 10 cm samples under low velocity impact at four different energy levels 20, 40, 60, and 80 J. The impacted samples were subjected to ultrasonic inspection. The C-scan images revealed that damage occurred in-between the plies and the damage area increased with increasing xGnP content. It was found that addition of xGnP nanoplatelets enhanced the resistance to crack propagation and reduced the through thickness penetration of resulting composites.
