Abstract
The pyrolysis of n-butane was investigated as a model fuel for the linear component of practical fuels and isobutane was studied as a model fuel for the branched component of practical fuels. The impact hydrocarbon gas phase kinetics on solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) operation was also investigated using C4 alkane and alkene isomers as model fuels. Pyrolysis experiments were performed for n-butane, isobutane, 1-butene, and isobutylene under fuel cell conditions. The implications of the analysis concerning the likelihood of gas-phase reactions within the anode channel of a SOFC are discussed. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 2007 AIChE Annual Meeting (Salt Lake City, UT 11/4-9/2007).
