Abstract
The progressive changes in the normative value of evoked potentials reflect the continuing maturation of peripheral and central nervous system. The knowledge of these changing values are an essential requirement for correct interpretation of evoked potentials and to determine the appropriate age for performing the studies. Constant stimulation and recording parameters must be used to establish norms and for future testing. Sedation should never be used. Neonates must be tested after feeding while sleeping except when tested for pattern-VEP. A comfortable temperature controlled environment is very helpful. Evoked potentials in neonates are more sensitive for the assessment of hearing and visual thresholds, functional integrity of sensory pathways, prediction of neurologic outcome and monitoring of progressive degenerative diseases than the clinical evaluation and neuroimaging studies. Longitudinal follow up studies are more informative than single studies.
