Abstract

An inexpensive electrooptical force-sensing transducer has been developed for measuring forces on insensate feet of diabetics. Embedded in a rubber insole, a set of these transducers measures the force distribution on the sole of the foot during walking. The transducer contains a U-shaped spring that is compressed by the force exerted, decreasing the amount of light passing from a light-emitting diode to a light-sensing solar cell. The operating range is from 0 to 50 N but can be changed by using different spring metals and dimensions.
