Abstract
The effect of plasma on the composition and temperature of the offgas produced in a CO2-O2 coal gasification process utilising a fixed bed gasifier in the batch mode was studied. The following operating variables were investigated: coal rank, CO2/O2 ratio in the input gas, coal bed depth, and electrical energy input (single and three phase modes). The results showed that plasma increased the offgas temperature and improved the reducing quality of the offgas (i.e. increased the CO and H2 contents). The offgas, after plasma treatment and possibly desulphurisation, could be used as the reducing gas in a direct reduction process.
