Abstract

The effect of the non-uniform gasket contact stress due to flange rotation on the leakage behavior of bolted flanged joints was investigated. It was found that the effective width depends on the applied load, the rotational flexibility of the flange and the type of gasket. The maximum gasket stress for sheet gaskets was located at the gasket outer periphery and hence the thickness of the gasket at this location was found to be one of the key parameters that controls leakage.
