Abstract

The work consists of an integrated diagenetic study of the Permo-Triassic succession outcropping in the Northeastern United Arab Emirates (UAE). The studied sedimentary rock sequence is partly correlatable with the Khuff Formation, which contains huge gas accumulations in the subsurface of the Arabian Plate. Fiedwork, thin section petrography, stable isotopes, fluid inclusion and burial history modeling investigations permitted to reconstruct the paragenesis of the diagenetic events. The entire Middle Permian to Upper Triassic succession is characterized by a relatively consistent diagenetic history. Generally, the studied carbonates were dolomitized relatively soon after deposition by sabkha- and marine-related fluids. After reaching burial condition, evidenced by the formation of bed-parallel stylolites, post-compaction, high temperature and highly saline diagenetic fluids are responsible for the precipitation of dolomite, quartz and calcite cements in fractures and vugs, with locally recrystallization of the early diagenetic host dolostone. The studied diagenetic minerals were formed in association to fractures and faults linked to tectonic stress. Considering the regional geology and the tectonic history of the area, the syn-tectonic flow of hot fluids and associated diagenesis are suggested to have occurred along the Hagab thrust and coeval structures during the Tertiary tectonic compression (mainly Oligocene-Miocene) associated with the Zagros orogeny.
