Abstract

This paper deals with the control of micro-hydro driven self-excited induction generator (SEIG)-based off-grid power generation system. For terminal voltage control, a four-leg voltage source inverter (VSI) is employed. The VSI system also provides harmonic and neutral currents compensation while the SEIG system is feeding 1-φ and 3-φ loads. For generation frequency control, the SEIG system uses an adjustable speed induction motor drive (ASIMD) system coupled to a water pumping mechanism. The ASIMD system acts like an auxiliary load and consumes the power in excess of the actual loads in order to regulate the system frequency. The power absorbed by the ASIMD system is utilized in water pumping applications. A third order pre-filter (TOPF)-based control algorithm is proposed for the control of the VSI system. The ASIMD system uses direct torque control (DTC) to achieve adjustable speed control. The performance of the SEIG-based autonomous power system with the proposed control is demonstrated using experimental results.
