Abstract

Quantitative measurements of condensate number in 7Li is made after initially obtaining qualitative evidence for Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in magnetically trapped 7Li. The density distribution is measured by imaging a laser beam directed through a cloud. The spatial absorption profile of the probe is used to measure the atom distribution. The images are analyzed by fitting an equilibrium Bose-Einstein distribution to the data. Results shows that condensate number is found to be relatively small in all cases and depending on the resolution assumed, the maximum condensate number is observed to be between 900 and 2000 atoms.
