Benign neonatal sleep myoclonus

Benign neonatal sleep myoclonus (BNSM) is an age related entity characterized by nonepileptiform sleep specific episodic motor activity. BNSM should be considered in all neurologically normal neonates with a history of episodic motor activity. The diagnosis should be established in the presence of repetitive limb jerks without facial or axial involvement that occur only during sleep, stop with arousals and are not associated with concomitant electroencepha lographic (EEG) changes. Video-EEG-telemetry is the study of choice to make the diagnosis. BNSM requires no treatment, usually disappears by 6 months of age and is not associated with subsequent seizures or developmental delay.
