Abstract

We present an improved version of the bit-interleaved turbo-coded modulation (BITCM) scheme with constellation shaping originally introduced in [3]. Simulation results carried out on a 3-bit/dim 16-PAM BITCM indicate that, by implementing an iterative decoding algorithm at the receiver side, it is possible to obtain shaping gains almost equal to 0.8 dB, which is very close to the maximal achievable values predicted by theory. It is also shown that, in most practical cases, the receiver structure can be simplified by removing the demapper from the iterative decoding loop, without any performance degradation.
